RBI interview: talk like an economist
Data, and the right keywords, let you steer your own interview.

Data-nomics
Support every argument with a data point. Official documents like the Economic Survey, the Budget and RBI annual reports are full of data for a reason, and RBI asks for data even in Phase I and Phase II.
- Budget numbers
- Economic Survey: concepts, data, trends
- RBI data: money supply, payments and settlements
- GDP: growth rates, sectoral composition
- Macro indicators: deficit targets, inflation, FDI
- Employment: organised versus unorganised, formal versus informal
Keywords
Use economic terms, and avoid generic answers. Asked about Operation Twist, don’t say “buying long-term bonds and selling short-term bonds”. Say “a monetary policy tool that aims to flatten the yield curve, by buying long-term bonds and selling short-term ones, which reduces the spread”.
The next question will most likely be about the yield curve, which you have prepared. You have steered the interview where you wanted, and it becomes more structured, with fewer random questions.
